DIY Maxi Skirt
By Ashlea McDaniel
So during the summer, in my spare time between my internship and job, I had a chance to do a few DIY projects; or DYO (Do Your Own) as I like to call them. What first inspired me was this maxi skirt I had seen on Pinterest. I followed the link and it took me to a site, Mimigstyles.com, with a lot of tutorial videos by someone named Mimi G. Her projects looked amazing, and her tutorials were very easy to go by. So I then went to the crafts supply store [i.e. Hobby Lobby] to get fabric because I was excited about trying this for myself.
Materials Needed:
2 1/2 yards of any fabric
Spool of thread (color of your choice)
Scissors
Measuring tape
Sewing Machine
Safety/fabric pins
Elastic band (width of your choice)
Steps to Follow:
-
Measure out fabric to match length of your legs and waist. When measuring around the waist you want to double the size so you will have enough to gather and make a full skirt.
-
Cut two exact pieces of fabric on the fold. The fold should be the width of your waist.
-
Sew the two pieces together, creating two side seams. I used 5/8 seam allowance on my seams. Once you have the two pieces sewn together, you want to create a band piece.
-
Fold down the fabric at the top about an inch, or depending on how wide your elastic band is.
-
Sew one seam around the entire skirt, leaving the ends open and leaving enough space to slide your elastic band through. It will help to use a safety pin to pull the band through.
-
Once your elastic is through sew the opening together and you'll have your maxi skirt!
